Health and Social Care

BTEC Health and Social Care is a work-related course. It introduces you to the employment area of Health and Social Care and provides a good basis to progress to a more advanced work-related qualification. In Year 9, students will begin with an introduction to Health and Social Care and will then move on to study Human Growth and Development. In Year 10, they will study Health and Social Care Services and Values. Students will study and prepare for an exam component in Year 11, Health and Wellbeing.

The Tech Award gives students the opportunity to develop sector-specific knowledge and skills in a practical learning environment. Lesson are based in IT rooms to allow hight quality assignments to be produced.

The main focus is on three areas, which cover:

  • Skills and processes, such as interpreting data to assess an individual’s health, and designing a plan to improve their health and wellbeing.
  • Attitudes, namely the care values that are vitally important in the sector, and the opportunity to practise applying them.
  • Knowledge that underpins the effective use of skills, processes and attitudes, including human growth and development, health and social care services, and factors affecting people’s health and wellbeing.

The course is made up of three units, each of which will be assessed on a regular basis mainly through the marking of coursework including homework, presentations and role play for particular units studied. Your progress will be closely monitored to ensure that you are fully supported to achieve your potential. It is important that you meet the deadlines in order to keep up to date with the work. You will also have to sit a 3 hour exam towards the end of the course in Year 11.
At the end of the three year course, you will achieve the equivalent to one GCSE, either a ‘Pass’ (grade C), a ‘Merit’ (grade B) or ‘Distinction’ (grade A).

This qualification is for students who wish to develop applied knowledge and practical skills in health and social. It is designed with both practical and theoretical elements, which will prepare students for further qualifications in Child Care, Health and Social Care, Psychology, Sociology, Early Years and Biology.

Component 1: Human Lifespan Development

Component 2: Health and Social Care Services

Component 3: Health and Wellbeing

Students will attend masterclasses, workshops with employer partners, go on external trips and visit Calway House where students work with the residents.
