Welcome to the Modern Languages Faculty
At Bishop Fox’s we pride ourselves on the quality of teaching and learning in the Language Faculty.
Language learning at Bishop Fox’s is fun! Lessons are delivered using a variety of methods – songs, games and activities, ICT, plus the more traditional skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. All students currently study French from Year 7, continuing if they wish, to undertake a GCSE in a language at KS4 – students will have the opportunity to experience Taster Spanish lessons in Year 8.
Our biannual study visits to France have proved very successful – last year we visited the Opal Coast with excursions to St. Omer, the WW1 battlefield site Thiépual and Parc Astérix, as well as a local goat farm, a bonbonnerie and a local bakery Boulogne-Sur-Mer.
Throughout the school year there are various language activities available to different year groups to promote a wider understanding of both language and culture. Key Stage 3 students have the opportunity to have support from staff and older students with their homework weekly in French Club. Key Stage 4 students have the option of speaking and writing practice with languages staff weekly after school and have the opportunity to borrow French or Spanish films to improve their Listening skills – Spanish students also undertook a lesson cooking tortilla española and gazpacho following instructions entirely in Spanish last year. Opportunities to experience taster sessions in Japanese have been introduced weekly for Key Stage 4 students.
New AQA GCSE courses are being delivered to Years 9, 10 and 11, using a new set of course books – ‘Studio’ in French and ‘Viva’ in Spanish. The four skills of Listening, Reading and Writing are assessed by way of terminal exams and Oral exams in Year 11.
