Welcome to the Modern Languages Faculty
At Bishop Fox’s we pride ourselves on the quality of teaching and learning in the Language Faculty.
Language learning at Bishop Fox’s is fun! Lessons are delivered using a variety of methods – songs, games and activities, ICT, plus the more traditional skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. All students currently study French from Year 7, continuing if they wish, to undertake a GCSE in a language at KS4 – students will have the opportunity to experience Taster Spanish lessons in Years 8.
Our biannual study visits to France have proved very successful – last year we visited the Opal Coast with excursions to St. Omer, WW1 battlefields and Parc Astérix, as well as Montcavrel goat farm, a bonbonnerie and a visit to a local bakery to see how croissants are made.
Throughout the school year there are various language activities available to different year groups to promote a wider understanding of both language and culture. The national holidays of both France and Spain are celebrated as well at the European Day of Languages on 26th September.
French Club is open to all students – in previous years a tour of the school was produced in French and the film edited on the Apple Mac Computers in the Digital Studio. Students created tasks and games for primary students as well as performing a French nativity play for staff. Spanish Club produced a fairy tale play last year and is currently undertaking a virtual tour of the Spanish speaking world.
KS4 students have the option of speaking and writing practice with languages staff weekly after school and have the opportunity to borrow French or Spanish films to improve their Listening skills – Spanish students also undertook a lesson cooking tortilla española and gazpacho following instructions entirely in Spanish last year.
New AQA GCSE courses are being delivered from Year 10 onwards, using a new set of course books – ‘Studio’ in French and ‘Viva’ in Spanish. The four skills of Listening, Reading and Writing are assessed by way of terminal exams and Oral exams in Year 11.
